Ben Haggarty
Ben Haggarty is a teller of traditional tales – famous for dynamic performances and vivid composition. He holds in his mind a repertoire of over 350 carefully researched, repaired, recombined and recreated folktales, fairy tales and myths; some are 3 minutes long, some are 3 hours long! For more than a quarter of a century he has been a pioneer of the revival of professional storytelling in Britain, telling stories to adults and children. As a child, Ben’s Saturday job was unpacking (and secretly reading) children’s books in his grandfather’s bookshop on the Kings Road in London. This meant that, by the time he left school, he was thoroughly steeped in magic, raw myth and children’s literature. Since then he has travelled all over the world searching for stories and listening to very many fabulous tale tellers. He particularly enjoys working with ancient art in museums because he believes that our ancestors communicate to us through the art and stories they left behind. He runs Britain’s longest established performance storytelling club, The Crick Crack Club and, since 2001, has been the official storyteller with Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble telling stories on concert stages such as the Carnegie Hall and Chicago’s Millennium Park. Ben is the Honorary Professor of Storytelling at the Berlin University of the Arts.
